About Phototherapy
Jaundice is common in newborns and usually mild. When the bilirubin level rises above a safe limit for the baby's age, phototherapy — special blue light on the skin — helps the body clear it.
Double-surface phototherapy lights the baby from above and below, so more skin is treated and bilirubin falls faster.
When to bring your child
- Yellow colour spreading to the tummy, arms or legs
- Jaundice in the first 24 hours of life
- A jaundiced baby who is sleepy or feeding poorly
- Pale stools or dark urine
What to expect

Common questions
Is phototherapy safe for my baby?
Yes. It is a standard, well-established treatment. The eyes are covered and the baby's temperature and feeding are watched throughout.
Can I keep breastfeeding?
Yes — frequent feeding helps clear bilirubin. Feeds fit around the light sessions.
How long does phototherapy take?
Most babies need about a day or two. Bilirubin is re-tested during treatment and the lights are stopped once it falls to a safe level for your baby's age.
Can phototherapy be given at home?
Home phototherapy is used only for a few well babies with mild jaundice, and it still needs regular blood tests. For most babies who need treatment, hospital phototherapy is safest because bilirubin, temperature and feeding are watched throughout. The doctor will advise you.
What does phototherapy cost per day?
