About Level 2 NICU
A Level 2 NICU (special care nursery) looks after newborns who need more than routine care — babies born a little early, babies with low birth weight, breathing difficulty, infection, low sugar or significant jaundice.
Babies are watched round the clock with continuous monitoring, warmers, phototherapy, CPAP and high-flow oxygen support, under the care of a neonatologist. Parents are kept informed at every step and encouraged to take part in feeding and care as soon as the baby is ready.
When to bring your child
- Your baby was born early or with low birth weight
- Fast, noisy or laboured breathing after birth
- Jaundice that is spreading or rising quickly
- Poor feeding, unusual sleepiness or low temperature
- Your obstetrician or another hospital has advised a NICU transfer
What to expect

- 2MonitoringHeart rate, breathing, oxygen and temperature are tracked continuously.
- 3TreatmentWarmth, feeding support, oxygen, CPAP, phototherapy or medicines — as your baby needs.
- 4Going homeOnce stable and feeding well, you get clear instructions and a follow-up plan.
Common questions
Can parents stay with the baby in the NICU?
Parents are encouraged to visit, touch and help feed their baby whenever it is safe. The NICU team will explain visiting and hygiene rules on admission.
How long will my baby need to stay?
It depends on why the baby was admitted. Some babies need a day or two; premature babies may need longer. The doctor reviews progress daily and will tell you what to expect.
Which babies need a NICU?
Babies born early or small, and newborns with breathing difficulty, infection, low blood sugar, feeding problems or jaundice that needs close treatment. The doctor decides after examining your baby.
Who looks after babies in the NICU?
Care is led by Dr. Muni Mohan CH, a pediatrician and neonatologist with a Fellowship in Neonatology (FNNF), with the NICU nursing team monitoring babies round the clock.
Can my baby be transferred to the NICU from another hospital?
Yes. Call us before the transfer so the team can prepare. Please bring the birth and treatment records with you.
