About Emergencies

Children can become unwell very quickly. Emergency care is available 24 hours for breathing difficulty, fits, high fever with drowsiness, severe dehydration, injuries and poisoning.

Call ahead if you can, so the team is ready when you arrive — but never delay coming in to make a call.

When to bring your child

  • Difficulty breathing, blue lips or chest pulling in
  • A fit (seizure) or unusual drowsiness
  • Fever in a baby under 3 months
  • Very few wet nappies or no urine for many hours, or repeated vomiting
  • Swallowed medicine, chemicals or a small object

What to expect

  1. 1TriageYour child is assessed immediately and the sickest children are seen first.
  2. 2StabiliseOxygen, fluids and medicines are started as needed.
  3. 3Next stepsThe doctor explains whether your child can go home or needs admission.
